If you have a few days to prepare the most logical place of refuge would have to be the open water. Assuming zombies haven't evolved into uber-intelligent man eaters; I would head straight towards the nearest large body of H2O. Oceans would be preferable, but large lakes would work in a pinch.

You would first need to secure a boat, and make sure you can operate it. If it's a large boat you might need to find someone to captain. Stock up on food, water, weapons, and most importantly: tools. The idea here is to find an island where you can live sustainably. At first you could ration the food you brought while you slowly learn to forage and hunt. If you're smart you will also try to bring a diverse selection of seeds for farming your own fruits and vegetables. In this scenario, survival is based less on defending yourself from zombies, and more on your resourcefulness in finding food, water and shelter.

It would be unwise to bring a lot of people with you. Less people means less mouths to feed. If you have the time you should try to select your companions based off their usefulness in survival situations. Try to balance your party with a mix of brains and brawn.

There may come a time where you will have to fight. Be it swimming zombies or resource-starved humans, weapons are a must. Primitive spears, knives and throwing rocks can be produced quickly and easily but if you have the time you should try to develop more advanced weaponry. This could include bows or slings.

Fortunately, islands can be very defensible. Find or create a central vantage point with altitude. Keep a lookout here 24/7. Create simple traps, ditches, rock slides and other fail-safe defenses to give you a home advantage.

Over time, you will come to love your new island paradise. With a level head, hard work, and a lot of luck you should be able to survive for years to come. And most importantly: don't forget to procreate!

Following Spencer's lead with a few minutes warning from home, I would gather any necessary supplies that myself and whoever was with me could carry. Supplies would include non-perishable or long lasting food, multi-tool (I have a Leatherman in my car), first-aid kit, etc. My weapon would have to be something like a baseball bat at first since there aren't any firearms at my house, i'd also probably have a couple kitchen knives but more for utility than defense.

My philosophy is to keep your equipment light, and to keep moving. So once me and my group were ready we would make our way out of any urban centers, the less populated the area before the attack the better. I wouldn't want to hole up anywhere because if something goes wrong odds are you're f--ked, and also you aren't the only person who's going to do that.

When the attack happens civil society is going out the window. Maybe it's just my Cynicism but I feel everyone is going to be looking out for themselves and their friends/family, it'll basically come down to who has the bigger stick, if you're group comes across a bigger/more well armed group that wants something you have, they're going to take it. So my strategy is to go where people aren't.

For ongoing survival it would be the basics, don't move at night, always keep a lookout, don't draw attention to yourself. Keep on the move and away from developed areas unless you need to resupply, and then go for smaller places like gas stations. It would probably come down to our group moving through the Appalachian Mountains from place to place.

If I only had a few minutes notice for the incoming zombie apocalypse, I would drive/run to my nearby grocery store, which is a block away from me. If I could get people to help me and had enough time, I would make a blockade with cars and grocery carts blocking the windows and doors of the store, thus giving me and the other survivors a store-full of food to survive off of until we could formulate a plan to go from there.

Failing that--if I can't get people to work together or don't have time to block off the entrances, I'd grab whatever food I could and go upstairs. There are a few offices at the front of the store which are above the entrance. There a door and immediately a long set of stairs. I would block off the stairs with whatever I could and hide away up there.

I used to work for the store, so I know there is no way but that set of stairs up there, except *maybe* the ceiling, but I don't think zombies would have access to that. There are some offices, a bedroom, a bathroom with shower, and I belief roof access from up there. It would make a nice secure hideout. There is also windows which look out over the store from the offices, so you could see the state of the store and if you had a weapon would be able to easily snipe zombies down below with impunity. Bwhaha.

There are a few other stores in the same shopping center, so the next step would be to try to get over to their roofs and maybe get inside them to look for more supplies.

The big downside to this while plan is that there is no weapons that I know of. Unfortunately, I am not a gun owner and there is no gun store nearby that I know of, so I would be shit out of luck in that respect. I would hope maybe to team up with people who have some weapons.

Long term--longer than a month or two--I would probably be screwed, but hopefully by then the horde would be thinned out or weakened.
